When You Have Six Months to Plan and Nothing Feels Available

Every year, we hear from couples who want to plan their wedding in under a year, sometimes closer to six months. While this timeline is absolutely doable, it does require a bit more flexibility. The biggest shift is understanding that you may not get everything you originally imagined, but you can still have a beautiful, joyful, and very intentional wedding.
Here’s what we recommend considering if you’re working with a shorter planning window and still want the experience to feel fun.

Venues: Dig into all-indoor options

Outdoor venues are almost always the first to book. Because so many couples prioritize open-air ceremonies, availability disappears quickly, often more than a year in advance. All-indoor venues tend to offer far more date flexibility, especially on shorter timelines, and can open up excellent options that might otherwise be overlooked. Expanding your search to include indoor spaces can be the difference between holding out for the perfect outdoor venue and confidently locking in a great date you love.

Venues: Don’t knock the barn

We know, we know. Barns have been drilled into our collective consciousness since the early 2010s, somewhere between burlap runners and mason jar centerpieces. But we urge you to reconsider. Think Footloose prom energy over Pinterest rustic. Many modern barn venues are massive, light-filled, and beautifully designed blank canvases that allow for incredible weather flexibility. They often come with built-in infrastructure, ample space, and far more availability than people expect. With the right design approach, a barn can feel elevated, intentional, and effortlessly cool.

Venues: Restaurant plus a fun bar is a power move

Restaurants are excellent short-timeline venues. They already have staff, furniture, kitchen flow, and service dialed in. Pairing a restaurant reception with a nearby bar for dancing or an after-party creates a relaxed, celebratory vibe and cuts down on planning complexity significantly.

What ever happened to the Friday wedding?

Friday weddings can be a major win. They open up venue and vendor availability and often come with more flexibility across the board. If your guests are comfortable taking a day off, it gives everyone an excuse to turn the celebration into a full weekend. We’ve heard rave reviews from guests who love having time to truly bask in the city their friends have called home, exploring neighborhoods, lingering over meals, and extending the joy well beyond a single night.

Consider Off-Season dates

Peak wedding season fills quickly, but the off-season holds some truly special advantages. Late winter and early spring open up incredible venues and vendor availability, often at lower rates and with far more date flexibility. In Central Oregon, it can mean fresh snow, cozy mountain energy, and even skiing as a built-in Sunday activity. In California, it can mean lush greenery and seasonal blooms like peonies making an early appearance. Just as importantly, your guests will thank you. These months tend to be far less hectic, with fewer competing events and a more relaxed, celebratory feel overall.

Catering: If it fits the vibe, consider food trucks

Food trucks can be more flexible than traditional catering and often have better short-notice availability. They work especially well for casual, outdoor, or modern weddings and can create a fun, communal atmosphere. When aligned with the overall vibe and you have the right logistical and staffing support for the day, they’re a crowd-pleaser.

At the end of the day, shorter timelines are not a compromise, they are simply a different way in. When you lead with flexibility, trust your team, and stay focused on how you want the day to feel rather than checking every original box, the experience often becomes lighter, more joyful, and more present. Some of our favorite weddings have come together quickly because decisions were made with confidence and momentum. There is so much magic available to you on this path. With the right mindset and support, your wedding can feel not just “pulled off,” but thoughtfully designed, deeply meaningful, and genuinely fun.
